Cowork Hub and local College join forces to shape the future workforce...

In 10 years’ time, some of the work experience students who have had the opportunity to work with our members will probably be taking a trip down memory lane and wondering how much taking a work placement scheme has successfully shaped their career path.
And they won’t be alone. Recent statistics from High Flyers Research reveal that over half the recruiters in the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers said that graduates “who have had no previous work experience at all are unlikely to be successful during the selection process and have little or no chance of receiving a job offer for their organisations’ graduate programmes.”
Work Work Work
In today’s highly competitive job market, it’s vital that young adults go under some sort of relative work experience as such schemes equip them with team working, interpersonal communication and commercial awareness, an important skill-set for making “it big” out there.
Over the past 3 months, we have been helping students from Ealing, Hammersmith & West London’s College to make that tough transition from school into work. So far, over 60 young professionals who are currently undertaking varied subjects at the local college have joined our initiative and learned a great deal.
“I have been given a good idea of how an office runs and it is mostly what I expected. I have also learned some research skills and improved my time management. When I was set work that would last throughout the day I laid out the points I was going to cover and how long I would spend time on writing them as well as researching them” – Neil Mistry.
“This experience has given me more time to focus and work on the things that I need to achieve each day. Hopefully, this will be replicated onto my college coursework. Being able to be surrounded by so many business and professional backgrounds under one roof has truly put a lot into perspective for me as an 18-year-old student" – Francesca Adu.
Going beyond the social responsibility manual
For Alison Franklin, Senior Employment Manager for the REED NCFE Partnership - Ealing, Hammersmith & West London's College, the relevance of work experience schemes transcends corporate social responsibility and can truly become the “make or break it” factor for a lot of young professionals.
“Partnership such as this one provides students with valuable first-hand experience of skills needed for their future careers. It gives a better insight into their chosen careers (what if they don’t like it?!), helps build confidence and develop their CVs. Also, it improves students’ university applications and it’s a chance of securing an apprenticeship role in the future”.
For Alex Molokwu, founder of Cowork Hub, this partnership is only the tip of the iceberg and there is much more to be accomplished.
“The world is rapidly changing and our goal is to attract a more diverse pool of talented students who will assist us towards thinking in different and creatively ways to ensure that we’re better prepared to overcome our members’ business challenges. In exchange, this experience will help them to be better equipped to deal with today’s market challenges and demands”.
Alex, who personally knows the role played by work experience schemes in giving students the skills and experience needed to stand out from the crowd when looking for jobs as well as helping them picking the right sector to work in, went on.
